Treat your Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with Hypnotherapy

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal system also known as irritable or spastic colon and functional bowel disease. Which affects 13- 20% of the population in the UK.

Since the first published research in 1980’s which demonstrated that hypnotherapy helped to alleviate both the physical and the emotional aspects of IBS,

a mountain of research has since been carried out which has supported the lasting value of hypnotherapy and IBS.

Because the evidence is so strong, the National Institute for Clinical Evidence (NICE) recommends hypnotherapy for IBS in the UK after 12 months of non- effective drug therapy. It’s essential that you have a diagnosis of IBS prior to having hypnotherapy.

I’m more than happy to discuss this evidence based, safe and effective approach with your GP or Gastroenterologist if you wish.

About IBS

IBS is not a disease, although the symptoms of IBS may be severe, the disorder itself is not a serious one. However, quality of life can be affected enormously. There is no actual disease present in the colon, it’s a problem of abnormal function.

Studies suggest that people with IBS have an over sensitive gut that overreacts to everyday stresses which results in malfunction of the bowel which may be due to an overabundance of nerve impulses flowing to the gut.

Although stress is not considered to be the cause of IBS, stress and anxiety can exacerbate symptoms and the subsequent worry about IBS can perpetuate the negative cycle.

Colonic symptoms

  • include diarrhoea and /or constipation
  • abdominal pain
  • cramps
  • flatulence
  • bloating
  • non – cardiac chest pain, non-ulcer dyspepsia.

A variety of non-colonic symptoms may also present such as :

  • nausea
  • low back pain
  • lethargy
  • bladder symptoms – frequency and urgency
  • gynaecological symptoms especially painful intercourse and increased symptoms pre and or during menstruation
  • thigh pain
  • poor skin and hair quality.

Symptoms fluctuate and also vary considerably from person to person. IBS can be a bit of a nuisance or life limiting misery. In addition to the physical symptoms, the emotional aspect can affect your quality of life enormously because of the frustrations, embarrassments, fears (especially worries about toilet facilities) that can impact on personal relationships, work, confidence, social life and leisure activities. Associated anxiety and sometimes depression are not uncommon.

Hypnotherapy is a safe, effective and a pleasurable experience whereby you can learn how to:

Learn Relaxation – it’s impossible to be relaxed and anxious at the same time, when practiced enough, these relaxation skills will become automatic. You become mentally calmer and in control.

Our body is amazing, it produces its own pain killers, endorphins and enkephalins. When our mind and body are relaxed their release is increased.

Quality relaxation speeds up the body’s natural healing abilities.

Tension held in our body contributes to pain, so relaxation relieves stress and tension, which increases ease and comfort

Gain control over your gut (rather than your gut controlling you) by suggestions of soothing imagery and sensations focused on the symptoms of each individual.

Use self-hypnosis to create your own calm and pain relief
Manage stress and its negative influence
Encourage positive thoughts and coping strategies
Increase your confidence and self- esteem.

The number of sessions will vary as everyone comes with their own, unique set of symptoms and issues and the therapy is tailored to each individual, At least 4 sessions are usually required.

Recordings are provided for home use. This repetition really reinforces the therapy and creates much better long term results. I also provide additional recordings to keep the number of sessions needed to a minimum.
